Do I need credit counseling & debtor education if I file bankruptcy?

All individual bankrutpcy filers are required to complete pre-bankruptcy credit counseling and pre-discharge debtor education. These may not be provided at the same time. Credit counseling must take place before you file for bankruptcy; debtor education must take place after you file.

How much does bankruptcy counseling cost?

The counseling fee is about $50, and you can ask for the fee to be waived if you can’t afford it, or to pay it in installments. The credit counseling organization will provide a certificate once you’ve completed the counseling, and you must file it along with bankruptcy paperwork within 15 days after your bankruptcy filing date.
